TYPES OF
HAZARD/
EXPOSURE
ACUTE HAZARDS/
SYMPTOMS
PREVENTION FIRST AID/
FIRE FIGHTING
FIRE Highly flammable. Gives off irritating or toxic fumes (or gases) in a fire.
NO open flames, NO sparks, and NO smoking. NO contact with strong oxidants, strong bases.
Powder, alcohol-resistant foam, water spray, carbon dioxide.
EXPLOSION Vapour/air mixtures are explosive. Risk of fire and explosion upon polymerization on contact with strong bases and strong oxidants.
Closed system, ventilation, explosion-proof electrical equipment and lighting.
In case of fire: keep drums, etc., cool by spraying with water.
EXPOSURE
AVOID ALL CONTACT!
IN ALL CASES CONSULT A DOCTOR!
  • INHALATION
  • Dizziness. Headache. Nausea. Vomiting. Weakness. Tremor and uncoordinated movements.
    Closed system and ventilation.
Fresh air, rest. Refer for medical attention (see Notes).
  • SKIN
  • MAY BE ABSORBED! Redness. Pain. Blisters (Further see Inhalation).
    Protective gloves. Protective clothing.
First rinse with plenty of water, then remove contaminated clothes and rinse again. Refer for medical attention.
  • EYES
  • Redness. Pain. Blurred vision.
Safety goggles or eye protection in combination with breathing protection.
First rinse with plenty of water for several minutes (remove contact lenses if easily possible), then take to a doctor.
  • INGESTION
  • Abdominal pain. Headache. Nausea. Shortness of breath. Vomiting. Weakness (further see Inhalation).
Do not eat, drink, or smoke during work.
Rinse mouth. Give a slurry of activated charcoal in water to drink. Induce vomiting (ONLY IN CONSCIOUS PERSONS!). Refer for medical attention.
SPILLAGE DISPOSAL STORAGE PACKAGING & LABELLING
Evacuate danger area! Consult an expert! Ventilation. Collect leaking liquid in covered containers. Absorb remaining liquid in sand or inert absorbent and remove to safe place. Do NOT wash away into sewer. Do NOT let this chemical enter the environment (extra personal protection: complete protective clothing including self-contained breathing apparatus).
Fireproof. Separated from strong oxidants, strong bases, food and feedstuffs. Keep in the dark. Ventilation along the floor. Store only if stabilized.
Unbreakable packaging; put breakable packaging into closed unbreakable container. Do not transport with food and feedstuffs.

    PHYSICAL STATE; APPEARANCE:
COLOURLESS OR PALE YELLOW LIQUID , WITH PUNGENT ODOUR.

    PHYSICAL DANGERS:
The vapour is heavier than air and may travel along the ground; distant ignition possible.

    CHEMICAL DANGERS:
The substance polymerizes due to heating, under the influence of light, bases and peroxides. Heating may cause violent combustion or explosion. The substance decomposes on heating producing toxic fumes including nitrogen oxides, hydrogen cyanide. Reacts violently with strong oxidants and strong bases causing fire and explosion hazard.

    OCCUPATIONAL EXPOSURE LIMITS (OELs):
    TLV: 2 ppm; 4.3 mg/m3 (skin) (ACGIH 1993-1994).
    OSHA PEL: 1910.1045 TWA 2 ppm C 10 ppm 15-minute skin
NIOSH REL: Ca TWA 1 ppm C 10 ppm 15-minute skin See Appendix A
NIOSH IDLH: Potential occupational carcinogen 85 ppm

    ROUTES OF EXPOSURE:
The substance can be absorbed into the body by inhalation of its vapour, through the skin and by ingestion.

    INHALATION RISK:
A harmful contamination of the air can be reached very quickly on evaporation of this substance at 20°C.

    EFFECTS OF SHORT-TERM EXPOSURE:
The substance and the vapour irritates the eyes, the skin and the respiratory tract. The substance may cause effects on the liver and the central nervous system. Exposure far above the OEL may result in death. The effects may be delayed. Medical observation is indicated.

EFFECTS OF LONG-TERM OR REPEATED EXPOSURE:
Repeated or prolonged contact with skin may cause dermatitis. The substance may have effects on the central nervous system and liver. This substance is probably carcinogenic to humans.

    ENVIRONMENTAL
    DATA
The substance is toxic to aquatic organisms.
    N O T E S
Depending on the degree of exposure, periodic medical examination is indicated. Specific treatment is necessary in case of poisoning with this substance; the appropriate means with instructions must be available. The odour warning when the exposure limit value is exceeded is insufficient. Rinse contaminated clothes (fire hazard) with plenty of water. Acritet and Acrylon are trade names.
