TYPES OF
HAZARD/
EXPOSURE
ACUTE HAZARDS/
SYMPTOMS
PREVENTION FIRST AID/
FIRE FIGHTING
FIRE Combustible. Liquid formulations containing organic solvents may be flammable.
NO open flames.
Powder, water spray, foam, carbon dioxide. Fire fighters should wear complete protective clothing including self-contained breathing apparatus.
EXPLOSION

In case of fire: keep drums, etc., cool by spraying with water. Fire fighters should wear complete protective clothing including self-contained breathing apparatus.
EXPOSURE
PREVENT DISPERSION OF DUST! STRICT HYGIENE!
IN ALL CASES CONSULT A DOCTOR!
  • INHALATION
  • Convulsions. Dizziness. Laboured breathing. Nausea. Unconsciousness. Vomiting. Pupillary constriction, muscle cramp, excessive salivation.
    Local exhaust or breathing protection.
Fresh air, rest. Refer for medical attention.
  • SKIN
  • MAY BE ABSORBED! Redness. Pain. Pupillary constriction (further see Inhalation).
    Protective gloves. Protective clothing.
Remove contaminated clothes. Rinse and then wash skin with water and soap. Refer for medical attention.
  • EYES
  • Redness. Pain.
Face shield or eye protection in combination with breathing protection if powder.
First rinse with plenty of water for several minutes (remove contact lenses if easily possible), then take to a doctor.
  • INGESTION
  • Abdominal cramps. Diarrhoea. Nausea. Vomiting. Pupillary constriction, muscle cramps, excessive salivation.
Do not eat, drink, or smoke during work. Wash hands before eating.
Rinse mouth. Induce vomiting (ONLY IN CONSCIOUS PERSONS!). Give plenty of water to drink. Refer for medical attention.
SPILLAGE DISPOSAL STORAGE PACKAGING & LABELLING
Sweep spilled substance into sealable containers. Carefully collect remainder, then remove to safe place. Sweep gently to avoid raising dust. Do NOT let this chemical enter the environment. Remove all sources of ignition (extra personal protection: P2 filter respirator for harmful particles).
Separated from oxidants, food and feedstuffs. Well closed. Keep in a well-ventilated room.
Do not transport with food and feedstuffs.

    PHYSICAL STATE; APPEARANCE:
WHITE ODOURLESS CRYSTALS OR SOLID IN VARIOUS FORMS.

    PHYSICAL DANGERS:

    CHEMICAL DANGERS:
The substance decomposes on heating or on burning producing toxic fumes of nitrogen oxides. Reacts violently with strong oxidants causing fire and explosion hazard.

    OCCUPATIONAL EXPOSURE LIMITS (OELs):
TLV: ppm; 5 mg/m3 (as TWA) (ACGIH 1993-1994).
    MAK: ppm; 5 mg/m3; (1992).
    OSHA PEL: TWA 5 mg/m3
    NIOSH REL: TWA 5 mg/m3
    NIOSH IDLH: 100 mg/m3

    ROUTES OF EXPOSURE:
The substance can be absorbed into the body by inhalation of its aerosol, through the skin and by ingestion.

    INHALATION RISK:
A harmful contamination of the air will not or will only very slowly be reached on evaporation of this substance at 20°C; on spraying or dispersing, however, much faster.

    EFFECTS OF SHORT-TERM EXPOSURE:
The substance irritates the eyes, the skin and the respiratory tract. The hot liquid may cause severe skin burns. The substance may cause effects on the nervous system , resulting in convulsions, respiratory failure. Cholinesterase inhibitor. The effects may be delayed. Medical observation is indicated.

EFFECTS OF LONG-TERM OR REPEATED EXPOSURE:
Cholinesterase inhibitor; cumulative effect is possible: see acute hazards/symptoms.
    PHYSICAL
    PROPERTIES
    Decomposes below boiling point:
    Melting point: 142°C
    Relative density (water = 1): 1.2
Solubility in water, g/100 ml at 30°C: none
Vapour pressure, Pa at 20°C: 0.7
    Flash point: 203°C
Octanol/water partition coefficient as log Pow: 2.34
    ENVIRONMENTAL
    DATA
This substance may be hazardous to the environment; special attention should be given to fish, honey bees.
    NOTES
Depending on the degree of exposure, periodic medical examination is indicated. Do NOT take working clothes home. Seffein, Rouyon, Dicarbam, Derba, Sevin are trade names.
