ACUTE HAZARDS/
SYMPTOMS
PREVENTION FIRST AID/
FIRE FIGHTING
FIRE Highly flammable.
NO open flames, NO sparks, and NO smoking.
Powder, AFFF, foam, carbon dioxide.
EXPLOSION Vapour/air mixtures are explosive.
Closed system, ventilation, explosion-proof electrical equipment and lighting.
In case of fire: keep drums, etc., cool by spraying with water.
EXPOSURE
PREVENT GENERATION OF MISTS! STRICT HYGIENE! AVOID ALL CONTACT!

  • INHALATION
  • Anorexia, diarrhoea, drowsiness, headache, sore throat. Symptoms may be delayed (see Notes).
Ventilation, local exhaust, or breathing protection.
Fresh air, rest. Artificial respiration if indicated. Refer for medical attention.
  • SKIN
  • Dry skin, redness, pain.
    Protective gloves.
First rinse with plenty of water, then remove contaminated clothes and rinse again. Refer for medical attention.
  • EYES
  • Redness, pain.
    Safety goggles.
First rinse with plenty of water for several minutes (remove contact lenses if easily possible), then take to a doctor.
  • INGESTION
  • Abdominal pain, diarrhoea, drowsiness, headache, nausea, vomiting.
Do not eat, drink, or smoke during work.
Rinse mouth. Refer for medical attention.
SPILLAGE DISPOSAL STORAGE PACKAGING & LABELLING
Collect leaking and spilled liquid in sealable containers as far as possible. Absorb remaining liquid in sand or inert absorbent and remove to safe place (extra personal protection: self-contained breathing apparatus).
Fireproof. Provision to contain effluent from fire extinguishing. Separated from bases, strong oxidants, acids.

    PHYSICAL STATE; APPEARANCE:
COLOURLESS LIQUID , WITH CHARACTERISTIC ODOUR.

    PHYSICAL DANGERS:
The vapour is heavier than air and may travel along the ground; distant ignition possible.

    CHEMICAL DANGERS:
On combustion, forms toxic and corrosive fumes and gases (hydrogen chloride - see ICSC # 0163 and phosgene - see ICSC # 0007). Reacts violently with strong oxidants, acids, and bases, causing fire and explosion hazard. Corrosive to aluminum alloys.

    OCCUPATIONAL EXPOSURE LIMITS (OELs):
    TLV: 75 ppm; 347 mg/m3 (as TWA); 110 ppm; 508 mg/m3 (as STEL) (ACGIH 1991-1992).
    PDK: 10 mg/m3 (as CEILING) (USSR 1977).
    OSHA PEL: TWA 75 ppm (350 mg/m3)
NIOSH REL: Ca See Appendix A
NIOSH IDLH: Potential occupational carcinogen 400 ppm

    ROUTES OF EXPOSURE:
The substance can be absorbed into the body by inhalation and through the skin, and by ingestion.

    INHALATION RISK:
A harmful contamination of the air can be reached rather quickly on evaporation of this substance at 20°C.

    EFFECTS OF SHORT-TERM EXPOSURE:
The substance irritates the eyes, the skin, and the respiratory tract. The substance may cause effects on the nervous system. Exposure to high concentrations may result in unconsciousness.

EFFECTS OF LONG-TERM OR REPEATED EXPOSURE:
Repeated or prolonged contact with skin may cause dermatitis. The substance may have effects on the liver and blood. Animal tests show that this substance possibly causes malformations in human babies.
