TYPES OF
HAZARD/
EXPOSURE
ACUTE HAZARDS/
SYMPTOMS
PREVENTION FIRST AID/
FIRE FIGHTING
FIRE Not combustible. Gives off irritating or toxic fumes (or gases) in a fire.

In case of fire in the surroundings: all extinguishing agents allowed.
EXPLOSION Risk of fire and explosion (see Chemical Dangers).

In case of fire: keep drums, etc., cool by spraying with water.
EXPOSURE

  • INHALATION
  • Confusion. Cough. Drowsiness. Unconsciousness.
Ventilation, local exhaust, or breathing protection.
Fresh air, rest. Artificial respiration if indicated. Refer for medical attention.
  • SKIN
  • Redness. Pain.
    Protective gloves.
Remove contaminated clothes. Rinse skin with plenty of water or shower. Refer for medical attention.
  • EYES
  • Redness. Pain.
    Safety goggles.
First rinse with plenty of water for several minutes (remove contact lenses if easily possible), then take to a doctor.
  • INGESTION

  • Do not eat, drink, or smoke during work.
Rinse mouth. Refer for medical attention.
SPILLAGE DISPOSAL STORAGE PACKAGING & LABELLING
Collect leaking and spilled liquid in sealable containers as far as possible. Absorb remaining liquid in sand or inert absorbent and remove to safe place (extra personal protection: self-contained breathing apparatus).
Separated from metals and alloys (see Chemical Dangers). Cool.

    PHYSICAL STATE; APPEARANCE:
COLOURLESS VOLATILE LIQUID , WITH CHARACTERISTIC ODOUR.

    PHYSICAL DANGERS:
The vapour is heavier than air and may accumulate in low ceiling spaces causing deficiency of oxygen.

    CHEMICAL DANGERS:
On contact with hot surfaces or flames this substance decomposes forming corrosive and very toxic fumes (carbonylfluoride; hydrogen chloride, ICSC # 0163; phosgene, ICSC # 0007; chlorine, ICSC # 0126; hydrogen fluoride ICSC0283). Reacts violently with calcium, potassium, sodium and powdered metals such as aluminium, beryllium, magnesium and zinc, causing fire and explosion hazard. Attacks alloys containing more than 2% magnesium.

    OCCUPATIONAL EXPOSURE LIMITS (OELs):
    TLV (as TWA): 1000 ppm; 7670 mg/m3; (as STEL): 1250 ppm; 9590 mg/m3 (ACGIH 1992-1993).
    MAK: 500 ppm; 3800 mg/m3; IV (1992).
    OSHA PEL: TWA 1000 ppm (7600 mg/m3)
    NIOSH REL: TWA 1000 ppm (7600 mg/m3) ST 1250 ppm (9500 mg/m3)
    NIOSH IDLH: 2000 ppm

    ROUTES OF EXPOSURE:
The substance can be absorbed into the body by inhalation.

    INHALATION RISK:
On loss of containment this gas can cause suffocation by lowering the oxygen content of the air in confined areas.

    EFFECTS OF SHORT-TERM EXPOSURE:
The substance irritates the eyes and the respiratory tract. The substance may cause effects on the central nervous system in high concentrations , resulting in lowering of consciousness. Exposure could cause cardiac arrythmia and asphyxiation.

EFFECTS OF LONG-TERM OR REPEATED EXPOSURE:
Repeated or prolonged contact with skin may cause dermatitis.
    PHYSICAL

Vapour pressure, kPa at 20°C: 36
    Relative vapour density (air = 1): 6.5
    Relative density of the vapour/air-mixture at 20°C (air = 1): 3.0
    Flash point: 350°C
Octanol/water partition coefficient as log Pow: 3.30
    ENVIRONMENTAL
    DATA
This substance may be hazardous to the environment; special attention should be given to water.
    N O T E S
To physicians: adrenergic agents are contraindicated. High concentrations in the air cause a deficiency of oxygen with the risk of unconsciousness or death. The odour warning when the exposure limit value is exceeded is insufficient. Do NOT use in the vicinity of a fire or a hot surface, or during welding. Freon 113, Frigen 113, Halon 113 are trade names.
