FIRE FIGHTING
FIRE Not combustible but enhances combustion of other substances. Many reactions may cause fire or explosion. Gives off irritating or toxic fumes (or gases) in a fire.
NO contact with flammable substances. NO contact with reducing agents and incompatible materials (see Chemical Dangers).
In case of fire in the surroundings: all extinguishing agents allowed.
EXPLOSION

In case of fire: keep drums, etc., cool by spraying with water.
EXPOSURE
STRICT HYGIENE!

  • INHALATION
    		• Sore throat. Cough. Shortness of breath.
    		Ventilation (not if powder), local exhaust, or breathing protection.
    		Fresh air, rest. Refer for medical attention.
  • SKIN
    		• Redness. Serious skin burns. Pain.
    		Protective gloves. Protective clothing.
    		First rinse with plenty of water, then remove contaminated clothes and rinse again. Refer for medical attention.
  • EYES
    		• Redness. Pain. Blurred vision. Severe deep burns.
    		Face shield or eye protection in combination with breathing protection.
    		First rinse with plenty of water for several minutes (remove contact lenses if easily possible), then take to a doctor.
  • INGESTION
    		• Sore throat. Burning sensation. Abdominal cramps. Vomiting. Diarrhoea. Shock or collapse.
    		Do not eat, drink, or smoke during work.
    		Rinse mouth. Refer for medical attention.
    SPILLAGE DISPOSAL STORAGE PACKAGING & LABELLING
    Sweep spilled substance into sealable containers; if appropriate, moisten first to prevent dusting. Carefully collect remainder, then remove to safe place. Do NOT absorb in saw-dust or other combustible absorbents. Do NOT let this chemical enter the environment (extra personal protection: self-contained breathing apparatus).
    		Separated from incompatible materials: see Chemical Dangers. Cool. Well closed. Ventilation along the floor.

    PHYSICAL STATE; APPEARANCE:
     BLUISH BLACK OR DARK PURPLE CRYSTALS , WITH PUNGENT ODOUR.

     Upon heating, toxic fumes are formed. The substance is a strong oxidant and reacts with combustible and reducing materials. Reacts violently with alkali metals, phosphorus, antimony, ammonia, acetaldehyde, acetylene causing fire and explosion hazard.

    OCCUPATIONAL EXPOSURE LIMITS (OELs):
     TLV: 0.1 ppm; 1 mg/m3 as CEILING (ACGIH 1994).
    OSHA PEL: C 0.1 ppm (1 mg/m3)
    NIOSH REL: C 0.1 ppm (1 mg/m3)
    NIOSH IDLH: 2 ppm


    		ROUTES OF EXPOSURE:
     The substance can be absorbed into the body by inhalation and by ingestion.

    INHALATION RISK:
     A harmful contamination of the air can be reached rather quickly on evaporation of this substance at 20°C.

    EFFECTS OF SHORT-TERM EXPOSURE:
     The substance irritates the eyes, the skin, and the respiratory tract.

    EFFECTS OF LONG-TERM OR REPEATED EXPOSURE:
     Repeated or prolonged contact may cause skin sensitization. Lungs may be affected by repeated or prolonged exposure to the vapour. The substance may have effects on the thyroid.

         		The substance is very toxic to aquatic organisms.
    N O T E S
    Iodine readily sublimes. The occupational exposure limit value should not be exceeded during any part of the working exposure. Rinse contaminated clothes (fire hazard) with plenty of water. Actomar, Diiodine, Eranol, and Iosan Superdip are trade names.
