PHYSICAL STATE; APPEARANCE:
CLEAR, YELLOW TO DEEP BROWN (DEPENDING ON THE PURITY) LIQUID
, WITH CHARACTERISTIC ODOUR.
PHYSICAL DANGERS:
CHEMICAL DANGERS:
The substance decomposes
on heating or
on burning
producing toxic fumes including phosphorous oxides and sulfur oxides.
Reacts
violently with strong oxidants.
Attacks iron and some other metals, some plastics and rubber.
OCCUPATIONAL EXPOSURE LIMITS (OELs):
TLV: ppm; 10 mg/m3 (skin) (ACGIH 1994).
OSHA PEL: TWA 15 mg/m3 skin
NIOSH REL: TWA 10 mg/m3 skin
NIOSH IDLH: 250 mg/m3
|
ROUTES OF EXPOSURE:
The substance can be absorbed into the body
by inhalation,
through the skin and
by ingestion.
INHALATION RISK:
Evaporation at 20°C is negligible; a harmful concentration of airborne particles can, however, be reached quickly on spraying.
EFFECTS OF SHORT-TERM EXPOSURE:
The substance may cause effects on the nervous system
, resulting in convulsions, respiratory failure.
Cholinesterase inhibitor.
Exposure above OEL may result in death.
The effects may be delayed.
Medical observation is indicated.
EFFECTS OF LONG-TERM OR REPEATED EXPOSURE:
Repeated or prolonged contact may cause skin sensitization.
Cholinesterase inhibitor; cumulative effect is possible: see acute hazards/symptoms.

Depending on the degree of exposure, periodic medical examination is indicated.
The symptoms of acute intoxication do not become manifest until before 30 minutes or 1-2 hours.
Specific treatment is necessary in case of poisoning with this substance; the appropriate means with instructions must be available.
If the substance is formulated with solvent(s) also consult the card(s) (ICSC) of the solvent(s).
Carrier solvents used in commercial formulations may change physical and toxicological properties.
Carbofos, Celthion, Cythion, Emmatos, Fosfothion, Fyfanon, Karbofos, Kypfos, Malamar, Malatol, Malatox, Sadophos, Sumitox, Zithiol are trade names.
